The European Side Impact Dummy, EuroSID-1, was developed for use as a test dummy in vehicles subjected to lateral impacts. EuroSID-1 is included as a test device in the European Regulation for Side Impacts: Directive 96/27/EC and ECE-Regulations '95.
EuroSID-1 represents a 50th percentile adult male. The dummy was developed and constructed by a group of European research laboratories working under the auspices of the European Experimental Vehicle Committee (EEVC). The final specification for EuroSID-1 was established by EEVC in April 1989, after a 10-year period of extensive development and repeated evaluation tests.
EuroSID-1 basically consists of a metal and plastic skeleton, covered by flesh-simulating materials. The sitting height is 0.904 m. The total body mass is 72 kg. The dummy consists of a number of main assemblies:
Simulation Models
Dummy Features
Head
An aluminum shell, covered by a pliable vinyl skin.
Neck
A composition of metal discs and rubber elements with special joints to head and chest to allow a realistic motion of the head relative to the chest.
Chest
Three separate identical ribs covered with flesh-simulating foam, attached to a rigid steel spine box by a system consisting of a piston/cylinder assembly, springs and a damper.
Shoulder
A special shoulder construction to allow the arms to rotate realistically and expose the ribs to direct impacts.
Arms
A plastic skeleton covered with a flesh simulating foam and a PVC skin. Only the upper arm is represented. The arms are connected to the shoulder by a construction allowing positioning of the arm at a fixed angle.
Lumbar Spine
A solid rubber cylinder with a steel cable inside.
Abdomen
A metal casting covered with a mass-carrying flesh simulating foam.
Pelvis
Two plastic iliac wings linked by a metal sacrum and covered by flesh-simulating foam and a PVC-skin.
Legs
A metal skeleton covered by flesh-simulating foam and plastic.
Suit
A rubber suit to cover the shoulder, chest, abdomen and pelvis during an impact.
The dummy can be used for left-hand side impacts as well as for right-hand side impacts.
Technical Specifications
Instrumentation
EuroSID-1 is prepared to accept the following instrumentation Standard instrumentation, required for regulation testing:
- A linear potentiometer for each of the three ribs, three abdominal force transducers, a load cell in the pubic symphysis area.
- A tri-axial accelerometer at the head CG of the dummy.
Optional Instrumentation
- a tri-axial accelerometer at the upper spine position.
- an uni-axial or tri-axial accelerometer at the lower spine position.
- an uni-axial accelerometer on each of the ribs.
- a tri-axial accelerometer in the pelvic cavity.
- the EuroSID-1 lower neck load cell, which measures 3 forces and 3 moments.
- the lumbar spine transducer
- the shoulder load cell
