BioSID Side Impact Test Dummy - 890520-000

The Biofidelic Side Impact Test Dummy 890520-000 (BioSID) was developed by General Motors, in cooperation with the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) Human Biomechanics and Simulation Standards Committee, for use in testing side impact crashworthiness and injury potential.

The BioSID can measure required thoracic and pelvic injury potential as well as rib deflection and other compression-based injury criteria. By rotating the upper torso 180', the dummy can be converted from a left side to a right side impact dummy.

The size and weight of the BioSID are based on the Hybrid III 50th Percentile Male Test Dummy and represent the "average" of the USA adult male population. It incorporates the range of motions, centers of gravity and segment masses defined by SAE to simulate those of human subjects.

Dummy Features

Head and Neck

The head and neck are based on the Hybrid III 5th Female and are certified to biomechanical corridors simulating the small human response in a lateral impact. A fitted urethane shield prevents airbag interference with the chin and neck during inflation. The neck cable is insulated with plastic bushings to eliminate mechanical noise and ground straps through the dummy minimize electrical noise. Upper and lower neck load cells are available.

Upper Torso

Upper torso has six ribs mounted laterally on one side to an asymmetrical thoracic spine weldment. Impact is on opposite lateral side. Lateral or triaxial accelerometers may be mounted below the base of neck and opposite the impacted side of lowest rib. Ribs, made from Vascomax® high strength steel, are flat-sided ovals. The lateral flat mounted to Thoracic spine is open; the impacted flat is continuous with mounting holes for two lateral accelerometers (one redundant) and a string pot cable. Damping material is bonded to inner long sides of ribs.

Single shoulder yoke and stub arm are mounted with large rubber washer to allow shoulder impact displacement and acceleration measurements.

Lower Torso

Lower torso includes: Straight lumbar spine for upright posture; bolted skeleton with detachable urethane iliac wings; femurs with rod end ball joints; crushable foam inserts at each H point; and torso cover with removable pelvic skin and flesh, zippered in rear. Load cells may be mounted at base of lumbar spine, in sacrum and at pubis.

Upper legs are modified Hybrid III design; knee sliders are replaced with steel blocks. Lower legs and feet are Hybrid III design.

Product Verification

Standard manufacturing and inspection procedures result in high quality machined and molded parts. Procedures include certification of materials, verification of dimensions and inspection of weld quality and over-all appearance of finished parts. The assembled dummy is then weighed, measured and tested. The following calibration tests are required by NHTSA.

  • Head Impact Test (lateral)
  • Neck Pendulum Test (lateral)
  • Shoulder Impact Test
  • Thorax Impact Test (with and without arms)
  • Abdominal Impact Test
  • Pelvis Impact Test
