Hybrid II 6 Year Old Child Dummy - SA106C001

The 6 Year Old Child Test Dummy (SA1O6COO1), developed by Humanoid Systems in 1975, was based on earlier designs by Alderson Research Laboratories and Sierra Engineering Company. It is a scaled down version of the Hybrid II 50th Percentile Male Dummy.

Anthropometry conforms to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) requirements for a 6 year old child 50th percentile dummy. Test parameters were scaled from 3 year old children and verified by NHTSA sponsored testing programs in 1983 and 1984.

The 6 Year Old Child Test Dummy was adopted into Federal Code as 49 CFR Part 572 Subpart I for use in developing and testing safety restraint systems for children beyond the size of the 3 year old mandated in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No.213 (FMVSS 213).

The sit-stand construction adapts the dummy for use in pedestrian impact studies. An optional lap shield may be used to prevent lap belt intrusion into the upper leg-pelvis joint in vehicle restraint use. The dummy may also be used for safety evaluations of furniture, specialty vehicles and other potential injury producing environments.

Construction

Three piece aluminum skull weldment and cast skull cap have removable vinyl head skin and cap skin. The detachable skull cap provides access to head accelerometers and neck attachment hardware. The skull weldment attenuates ringing during head impact.

Mounted directly to the skull base plate and thoracic spine assembly. The fixed angle between the neck and torso is determined by the construction of the thoracic spine.

Four pairs of steel ribs in the upper torso feature adhesively bonded damping material covered by vinyl shrink fit tubing. Ribs connect to rear of steel weldment thoracic spine. Torso instrument cavity at rear mounts three uniaxial accelerometers. Clavicle structure is mounted to thoracic spine with rod and ball clavicle links held in common carrier at front of thoracic spine. Cast clavicles simulate scapulae. Zippered vinyl chest jacket, with Ensolite® pad glued to the inside front, is easily removed.

Cylindrical lumbar spine assembly connects directly to the pelvic structure and to the thoracic spine with an adaptor.

Pelvis and abdominal assembly is sit-stand design with vinyl skin and foam flesh molded over an aluminum weldment. Hip ball joint sockets are rear allows placement of uniaxial accelerometers. Abdomen is easily removed from area surrounding lumbar spine between thorax and pelvis. Upper legs contain balls and retaining rings for hip joint. Femur friction plungers in pelvis control joint tension. Uniaxial femur force gages are easily mounted to measure knee impact forces. Damping material in knees controls impact response.

Lower legs and feet have steel skeletons with vinyl skin and molded foam flesh. Modifications for pedestrian studies include added ankle motions and accelerometer mounts.
